<image:caption>CHEF’S MESSAGE Jeronimo Yanez grew up in Saint Paul, MN and was eight years old when he first had the thought that he would like to be a police officer. His dream was to protect and serve his community. At 19 years old, Philando Castile had just graduated from high school and decided to begin working in the cafeterias of Saint Paul Public Schools. For fourteen years he protected and served the school children put in his care. On July 16, 2016, Officer Yanez, conducting a traffic stop, pulled over Mr. Castile in his car for a broken taillight. Seventy-two seconds later, Philando had been shot 7 times by Jeronimo. Jeronimo was 29 and Philando was 32. It was revealed that in his lifetime, Philando had been stopped by police over 40 times. It turns out that one of those times, 5 years before he was killed, Philando and Jeronimo had crossed paths. In that instance, also under the premise of a broken tail light. This made me wonder how close their lives actually were as they grew up within miles of one another.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To dissect this case through the lens of culinary arts I wonder, what culture did Jeronimo feed from that would allow him to take a life so swiftly? What has been served in this instance? Not protection. Not justice. This conceptual menu and its presentation will explore how these lives, so close in proximity, both had instincts at a young age to protect and serve, but the intersection of their lives ended with one killing the other. We will set the table for two and explore who we needed Jeronimo to be in that moment through community nourishment.</image:caption>

Reflection on how they were of service to the community and how they protected their families to insure our survival. Seventy-four seconds being the amount of time between Jeronimo turning on his squad car lights and the last of seven bullets being shot at Philando’s body.</image:caption>

<image:caption>DRINK Where do the seeds of racism and bias come from? Children reflect the values and experiences of their caretakers. Are those experiences glimpses of unconditional love and treating others as we would want to be treated? Or are they divisive examples of us versus them? This drink is composed of ingredients that inspire the former. Pouring a chia seed and hibiscus cooler that uplifts respect and hospitality while protecting the heart.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As we grow, we collect more lived experience and more patterns of behavior. I imagine, given their close ages, it was possible that Jeronimo and Philando may have gone to some of the same high school games or events in Minnesota. Did these high school years teach confrontation and brutality in moments of conflict? Or were they exposed to the necessity of de-escalation and communication? To eat from a shared dish is a sign of willingness to build trust. Sharing a spiced black eyed pea spread and teff crackers is offered to acknowledge and honor shared humanity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>MAIN DISH Stopped twice by the same cop five years apart. What needed to be different the first time so that the second time wasn’t fatal? The first stop was right after Jeronimo joined the police force. Had he already experienced the adrenaline and power of using force? Did he know that mistakes were usually erased with immunity? Was there still time to define the boundaries of protect and serve? Serving a steak and collard stew with skillet cornbread, Philando’s favorite foods, to insist that Jeronimo ingest Philando's perspective in 2011 so that 2016 could end differently.</image:caption>

<image:caption>DESSERT Jeronimo had a child the year before he killed Philando. Did becoming a father teach him more empathy and loyalty? Did it make him more protective and willing to dehumanize suspects perceived as a danger? Offering lastly a red velvet cupcake made with a raspberry cream cheese frosting and the authentic hue of sweet roasted red beets instead of the commonly used artificial dyes that can be lethal. You’ll see on the table that this cupcake is only partially complete on Jeronimo’s plate. It transitions into a confusion of ingredients. It’s up to you, and Jeronimo, to say whether this cupcake made to create accountability and possibility is falling apart or being made whole.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This menu provides a look at the influences and beliefs that led to Jeronimo succumbing to the inherent violence of his position and murdering Philando. At the menu's heart is the truth that allowing these traditions and cultures of fear, violence and indifference to continue uninterrupted will only lead to more death and suffering. Intentionally choosing empathy is crucial to the deconstruction of systemic racism. This meal creates space to reflect on the systems of accountability and cultural shifts that need to take root in order for us to survive together.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Constructing Justice - Deanna Van Buren</image:title>
<image:caption>Deanna Van Buren is the co-founder and executive director of Designing Justice + Designing Spaces. An architecture and real estate nonprofit working to end mass incarceration through place-based solutions, DJDS builds infrastructure that address its root causes: poverty, racism, unequal access to resources, and the criminal justice system itself. She has been profiled by The New York Times, and her TED Talk on what a world without prisons could look like has been viewed more than one million times. Van Buren received her MArch from Columbia University and is an alumna of the Loeb Fellowship at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Designing Justice + Designing Spaces (DJDS) is an architecture and real estate development non-profit working to end mass incarceration through place-based solutions. DJDS builds infrastructure that address the root causes of mass incarceration: poverty, racism, unequal access to resources, and the criminal justice system itself. Unlike the traditional adversarial and punitive architecture of justice—courthouses, prisons and jails—DJDS creates spaces and buildings for restorative justice, community building, and housing for people coming out of incarceration. Examples include restorative justice centers, which bring offenders and victims together to repair the relationship breach caused by a crime and build pathways to reconciliation; mobile resource centers, which deliver economic, educational, and social resources to under-resourced communities; and re-entry housing for people coming out of incarceration. Notable projects include Restore Oakland, the reimagining of the Atlanta City Detention Center into a Center for Equity, the Near Westside Peacemaking Center, and The Women’s Mobile Refuge Center.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Constructing Justice - Demar Matthews</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in Moreno Valley, CA, Demar received his Bachelor’s from HBCU Lincoln University of PA, and his Master’s of architecture at Woodbury University where he was awarded the Graduate Thesis Prize for his project Black Architecture: Unearthing the Black Aesthetic. His introduction to the field was through his article “A Black Architecture Education Experience” on archinect. Demar believes architecture and good design should not only be for the privileged. Every community deserves to be proud of the built environment around them, and the built environment around them should be based on the cultures of the people who live there; regardless of income, race, and gender. His company, Offtop Design is on a mission to improve the built environment in black neighborhoods through architecture and design using a comprehensive and collaborative method that draws on strong relationships with local communities and a deep understanding of their issues. Offtop is focused on the intersection of architecture, Black art, culture, and experience.</image:caption>

      <image:title>LEAP @ LA Design Festival - Julian Stephen</image:title>
<image:caption>Creator Julian Stephen is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in theater, film, and media. He discovered his passion for storytelling during his early college years through the inception of his first web series, which later evolved into his latest digital series, Appropriate Culture, which features his biological father and brother. He studied English and Theater at CCNY in Harlem, later discovering the magic of production from his three-year background in television, film, and working as a production coordinator at the Urban World Film Festival. Stephen doubles as a hip-hop artist/singer who believes music is the soundtrack to all art. Stephen is working towards launching a digital content studio and platform, aiming to build a bridge between Hollywood and the digital space. He intends to create an industry where artists creating without limits becomes the new norm for renaissance multi-hyphenates like himself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Francesca Harper is an internationally acclaimed, multifaceted artist who began her professional dance career with Dance Theater of Harlem, becoming a principal dancer in 1994. The vastness of her artistry and passion led her to perform with William Forsythe’s Ballet Frankfurt; Dancing Pleats, created by designers Issey Miyake and Gianni Versace; and Broadway productions, including Fosse, The Producers, All Shook Up, The Frogs, and the Tony-nominated The Color Purple. She’s held principal Broadway roles as Helene in Sweet Charity and as Judith in Sophisticated Ladies. Harper has received commissions and has choreographed works for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem, Richmond Ballet, Ailey II, Tanz Graz, Hubbard Street II, The New York Choral Society, The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Black Dance Theater, and her own company, The Francesca Harper Project, which was founded in 2005. Harper also served as ballet consultant for the feature film Black Swan. Francesca’s mother, Denise Jefferson, served as the director of The Alvin Ailey School for over 26 years and created the Ailey/Fordham BFA program, which provided young, aspiring dance artists with the opportunity to obtain college degrees while continuing to pursue careers as professional artists.</image:caption>
